  Alderman Acres -
A small company keeps stitching in downtown location
Article appearing in the Coffeyville Journal - Feb. 27, 1998

You might not have heard of it, but Alderman Acres continues to grow larger, nonetheless.

Alderman Acres, 623 Union, manufactures privacy curtains, draperies, bedspreads and pillow shams for all types of customers.

Alderman Acres also supplies window blinds of all types.

The business is located downtown in a 7,000 square foot building and is marketed throughout the United States to major healthcare and hospitality facilities, including residential projects, according to Jo Alderman, who along with her husband, Don, owns the business.

Eight employees make their living at Alderman Acres, up from three last year.  The business added several new pieces of equipment for manufacturing and became a corporation in September 1997.  That move allowed the Alderman's' children, Tom and Howard Alderman, and Patti Parten, to become shareholders in the corporation.

In 1997 Alderman Acres experienced a 62 percent increase in sales over 1996.

Plans for 1998 include the possible addition of two or three employees, remodeling, adding office space and investing in computerized equipment, according to Mrs. Alderman.   Plans are also in the works for the company to be online within three months.

Mrs. Alderman expects to see plenty of changes in the coming years.

"With our aggressive marketing plan, we will continue to experience a significant growth pattern," she said.

The next two to three years could see the addition of several sales personnel and up to 10 more employees, she said.

The first curtains made were for recreational vehicles in 1965 by Roc-A-Chair Mfg., located on North Central Street.  Roc-A-Chair then moved to the industrial park.   The business also manufactured furniture and implement seating.

In 1992, the business was sold and the name changed to American Craftsman.

"We were given the opportunity to purchase the curtain division of the company, which we did, in March of 1996," said Mrs. Alderman. "(We) moved the machinery, equipment, inventory and customer base to our present location on a Friday night and were in full production by Monday morning."

Mrs. Alderman is confident there will always be a need for the company's products.

"There will always be a need for privacy curtains in doctors clinics, physical therapy, chiropractic clinics, hospitals and nursing facilities," she said.   "We feel our company can contribute to the needs of the world economy."
